Twelve Monkeys (1995)
Nominated for the Academy Award for costumes and supporting actor. After unsuccessfully trying to fit Bruce Willis into The Fisher King, Gilliam was able to cast him in the lead role here. In this movie, we see a not too distant future where the remaining population hides underground from a deadly virus. Cole (Willis) is sent back in time to try to prevent the start of the spread of the disease. A strange journey in and out of the future and past, Gilliam scores big on this one. The film is a remake of the 1962 short French film, La Jetee (The Runaway). This is only the second film that Gilliam directed that he did not also participate in writing. He said that after reading it, he couldn't pass it up. Certainly understandable. (Directed by Terry Gilliam)
