Torn Curtain (1966)

Most Hitchcock fans, and even Hitchcock himself, have expressed disappointment in this film. It's the story of a scientist who leaves America and crosses over the "Iron Curtain" to East Berlin where his anti-nuclear war principles can be further explored.  But his ulterior motive is soon revealed when he tries to steal precious secrets from the communists right in their own house.

The film is dated as it revolves around the "Cold War" conflict that no longer exists, and some of the action is a little flat, but as a whole this is another great Hitchcock travel/espionage thriller.  Hitchcock uses the themes of hot and cold throughout the film to subtly portray levels of intensity.  And the scene where the communist agent is killed is brilliantly shot, but absolutely gruesome and is usually edited out for television showings.

(Directed by Alfred Hitchcock)
