In Her Shoes (2005)

Starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, Shirley MacLaine, and Mark Feuerstein.  Cinematography by Terry Stacey.  Editing by Lisa Zeno Churgin and Craig Kitson.  Produced by Lisa Ellzey, Carol Fenelon, Curtis Hanson, and Ridley Scott.  Written by Susannah Grant.  Directed by Curtis Hanson.

Despite growing up in the same house and within a similar structure, sisters Rose and Maggie Feller (played by Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz) could not be more different. Rose, the elder of the two, is a career oriented lawyer with a low self esteem and almost no social life. Maggie is youthful and beautiful, but also painfully ignorant and chronically unemployed.

Maggie’s carefree lifestyle has left her on the brink of alcoholism and virtually homeless.  She turns to her sister for help, but almost immediately violates the last glimmer of her trust by sleeping with her boyfriend. The two bitterly part ways, which leaves Maggie with no place to stay.

In the days before the conflict, Maggie had discovered that the grandmother she thought was dead is actually alive and living in a retirement community in Florida.  After the falling out with her Rose, Maggie targets her grandmother as a new host to leach onto and heads south. The grandmother (played by Shirley MacLaine) quickly discovers Maggie’s motives and sternly sets her on the right track.  Meanwhile, Rose has also reached breaking point in her own life and is taking steps towards repairing it in a fashion that is more satisfying and rewarding.

Jennifer Weiner’s second novel, titled In Her Shoes, was released in September of 2002 and spent several weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List.  The story sprouted from Weiner’s fascination with sibling relationships and how dissimilar two individuals who came from similar backgrounds can be. The book was optioned by Fox 2000 Pictures and developed through Tony and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions. Director Curtis Hanson and his partner Carol Fenelon signed on after reading Oscar nominated screenwriter Susannah Grant’s adaptation.

In Her Shoes was a success with critics, but a disappointment in the box office. It did, however, continue to prove Hanson’s versatility as a filmmaker.  To go from L.A. Confidential, to Wonder Boys, to 8 Mile, and then to this; that’s a pretty impressive assortment of genres under one’s belt in a fairly short period of time.
