Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Nominated for the Academy Award for screenplay based from previous material. Referred to, as "the greatest war movie ever" and few will disagree. Straight out of boot camp and into Vietnam, the movie's soldiers are exposed to some of the most hideous and soul breaking situations imaginable. The film is set in two distinct parts, a style again used by Quentin Tarantino in his film From Dusk Till Dawn. Kubrick said in an interview that he tried to use the pace used in the referenced book The Short Timers, where the story was continually broken with war battles. This was an effort to make it frustrating for the viewer that just wants to get on with the plot; in effect saying that war doesn’t just stop so you can make a film. Watch this one with your assault rifle and your mouse ears if you know what I mean. (Screenplay written and directed by Stanley Kubrick)
