From Hell (2001)

Starring Johnny Depp, Heather Graham, and Ian Holm.  The story of Jack the Ripper is as fascinating and captivating today as it was back when the murderer was still stalking the streets of London. Beginning in 1888, the killer took the lives of five White Chapel whores and created a sort of chaos and media frenzy that hadn’t been experienced in England before.  The reason this case is still in the popular media is that the true identity of the serial killer has never been truly identified.  And like many unsolved crimes, there have been a number of conspiracy theories introduced; ranging from the absurd to the altogether possible.  This story, which is based on a graphic novel by the same name, follows a fictional detective who is investigating the Ripper murders.  The detective has a sort of clairvoyant ability and his thoughts and dreams are haunted by what the murderer is thinking and seeing.  The Hughes brothers went to great lengths to ensure that the murder scenes depicted in the film were as accurate as possible.  They used crime scene photographs to lay out the victims and the surroundings exactly as one would have stumbled across it. The film overall is incredibly well done and a very compelling watch.  I actually found myself wanting it not to be over when it was. The wonderful thing about this film is that it helps the brothers stay away from being typecast as strictly “urban” filmmakers. There certainly isn’t any shame in being an urban filmmaker, but it is a shame to limit such incredible talent to one genre. (Directed by Allen and Albert)
