Frank Darabont
Biography: Frank Darabont was born in Montebeliard, France on January 28th, 1959. He was born in a refugee camp where his parents found temporary sanctuary after fleeing Hungary during the failed revolution in 1956. After coming to America, he lived in various cities across the States until his family finally settled in Southern California. After graduating from HollywoodHigh School he got a job as a production assistant for the 1981 slasher movie, Hell Night. There he met the executive producer Chuck Russell and the two became friends. Darabont worked a variety of film related jobs until Russell was given the opportunity to direct the second Freddy Kruger sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and asked Darabont to co-write the project. The film was a surprising hit and Darabont was given the chance to write for other horror movies like the remake of The Blob and The Fly II. He also found work writing for television series’ like “Tales from the Crypt” and “The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones”.
Darabont’s directorial debut was for the cable original film Buried Alive in 1990. Based on the strength of his short film project “A Woman in the Room”, which was inspired by a Stephen King short story, Darabont again earned King’s approval to adapt his story “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption”. Shawshank Redemption won seven Academy Award nominations and the praise of many film critics. He was equally successful with his next King collaboration, The Green Mile. Darabont is a fantastic director, but is best known for his writing abilities. These skills have earned him jobs as an uncredited script doctor for films like Saving Private Ryan, Eraser, and The Fan. Darabont has also moved into the business end by producing pictures like The Salton Sea and Collateral.
