Finding Forrester (2000)
Could also be titled "Good Will Hunting 2: Good Will in the Bronx". Not that the story is a bad one to adapt to, but it most certainly is turning into a formula. The film is about a teenage black boy growing up in the Bronx. He is smarter than his school is equipped for and can find no real mentor to nurture him.
One day, on a dare, he runs into the crazy old man who lives near where he plays basketball. The old man ends up being William Forrester, an author who has gone into hiding after finding fame with his "Great American Novel". The film has a lot to say about being a writer and challenges the art. The conflict between the young man and his professor is great, making the point that an unsuccessful teacher can either be helpful and nurturing or bitter and damaging to a young writer. (Directed by Gus Van Sant)
