Drugstore Cowboy (1989)

Some have referred to this film as a pioneer in a new genre: drug noir. The result is absolutely incredible. It makes an impact and sends a powerful message without being preachy. The story follows a young drug addict and his small adopted family of friends. The group gets their fix by traveling from city to city, knocking off drug stores and stealing every drug of value off their shelves. But the superstitious group's luck eventually runs out and things start to fall apart. In the end maturity wins and a healthier path is chosen by those who are willing to accept it. (Written and directed by Gus Van Sant)
