The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)

Nominated for the Academy Award for are direction/set decoration, costumes, visual effects, and make-up.

This film kind of forms an informal trilogy with Time Bandits and Brazil as far as eras in one's life (childhood, mid-life, and maturity). The Baron Munchausen, his henchman, and a little girl move around the universe visiting strange people and things and ultimately save their little town from the invading Turks. The name Munchausen comes from a German cavalry officer who was known for preposterous stories about his own experiences.

The term eventually came to describe one who tells outlandish lies. This led to the medical definition of "Munchausen Syndrome", an actual disorder where patients complain of nonexistent symptoms in effort to receive medical attention. And there's your history for today. (Screenplay written and directed by Terry Gilliam)
